Finishing homework is a nightly transaction: get through the worksheet, close the book. Learning is what leaves the student able to do the next worksheet on their own. Before we start teaching, we assess. A short diagnostic tells us where the actual gap is — and it’s almost never where the family expected. A South Plainfield High School student “struggling with Algebra 2” often turns out to have quiet holes in Algebra 1 fundamentals. You don’t fix that by drilling Algebra 2 problems. You fix it by rebuilding the foundation in parallel with the current class.

Approach that fits the student

One student needs the concept drawn out. Another needs to talk through it out loud until it clicks. Another needs to write it down or teach it back to the tutor. A good tutor cycles through approaches until something lands — then names it so the student learns that’s their strategy going forward.

A room where questions are cheap

A lot of students stop raising their hand in class not because they don’t have questions but because they’ve decided it’s not worth looking uncertain in front of their peers. A tutoring session is one of the few places where “wait, can you go back to that step?” costs nothing. Over time, that confidence follows them back into class.
